Course Overview

Most small businesses hire a few people a year, without an HR team, and learn the rules the hard way: an ad that says “young, energetic team”, an interview question about kids, a pay offer based on what someone earned before. Each one can lead to a complaint, and each one can cost you the best candidate.

In this course, you’ll take one hire from the decision to hire to a signed job offer. You’ll follow a fictional 11-person dental clinic in British Columbia, Quillhaven Family Dental, as it hires a certified dental assistant, and you’ll build your own hiring file alongside it, one short lesson and one fillable Word worksheet at a time. The course covers every province and territory except Quebec, plus federally regulated employers, and shows you where the rules differ. No HR team or experience needed.

What You’ll Accomplish

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

• Define a role and write a job description where every requirement is tied to the job
• Write a job ad that meets the posting rules where you hire, including pay transparency
• Screen applications and run structured interviews with the same criteria for everyone
• Ask lawful questions, including about eligibility to work, and avoid the risky ones
• Check references, credentials and backgrounds with consent, only when they’re job-related
• Make and document the decision, then send a clear, conditional written offer
